The Assassin List The Adam Drake Thriller Series The Adam Drake series Book 1 edition by Scott Matthews Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

First of all, let me express my admiration to Scott Matthews. Often, a first book in a series might not be as tight and well done as subsequent books. Not so here. This was a fascinating book right out of the gate, well written, and accurate in terms of terms, weapons, and their performance. It’s also kind of an interesting blend of a couple of genres. You have Adam Drake the attorney, and Adam Drake as the former Delta Operative, and there are occasions where he is both in the book. So this series has made it clear it isn’t going to fit into a single genre. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, and look forward to the series. In this, the first book, Adam Drake is asked to help a friend of his father-in-law, who is a US Senator. The problem was there was a breach and a murder at a secure defense contractor, and no one can figure out how it happened, as the security system inexplicably went down for the event. Adam Drake steps in to investigate and stumbles into a plot to assassinate the head of DHS by home grown Muslim terrorists. This is a timely series, and points to a real issue for the USA, home grown terrorism.

The Assassin List The Adam Drake Thriller Series The Adam Drake series Book 1 edition by Scott Matthews Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Being a 4 Star review I guess no one will read this, but by definition I can give no other rating, and the author deserves it. It is not a great book by any means. We know who the good guys and the bad guys are, and despite a reasonable effort the author does fail to add any real depth to their character. He does a better job adding depth to the settings, however. So, while not being great, it's a notch above good. It reads easy and the language is clean. The book ends on a bit of cliffhanger, and there are hints in this book that the bad guys motivations are not what they appear at first glance, we'll see. The only real 'complaint', why do people whose only job is to take threats seriously ignore potential threats and the only'smart guy' who sees it is our hero. It's a common theme, granted, but c'mon. Given the circumstances and the hero's background it is difficult to believe every agency doesn't say 'how high' when he says 'jump'. Good effort though, I liked it.
This novel is terrifying. It brings to reality that maybe the war on terrorism has moved to America on a much higher level than any of us suspect. Of course the author wants his readers to experience the thrill of this chilling story. But, reading it made me want to move somewhere else. I was born in America and love my country. To see it and our people attacked with such cold nonchalance is impossible to understand. That said, I still read this book without too much downtime in between chapters. It's compelling and one of those novels that sent my mind into high gear. This is possibly since the characters, the story and the present day setting all came together to make it more believable than I was prepared for.The main character is truly a hero and I loved his way of thinking quick with absolute skill. Basically, he is just an unassuming guy. But when he is called to action, he does become a superhero.

There is only one part of the story that was worrisome to me. Adam Drake introduces his faithful, extremely well trained dog, Lancer, who assists him in shutting down an attack on his home. There is a time when Adam leaves to take care of business. Aside from leaving food and water for the dog, he goes away and does not return for perhaps as long as a week or more. I worried about the dog and who would care for him. I kept on reading hoping that I would learn Adam had provided for Lancer in some way. Still, the novel ended and left me wanting to continue with the storyline. I plan on reading the other books in the series. I hope I see Lancer in the next book.
I'm giving this 3 1/2 Stars. It was pretty predictable, plot-wise, and the bad guys were shown to be very evilly bad (is that a word?) so you were really rooting to have them get killed. I had no problem with it being non-PC, but I felt the Feds were more stupid and incompetent than reality while the private ex-soldiers were more skilled and lucky with cutting-edge technology than reality.

On the plus side, it did NOT have the typical self-published author plot device of "insta-love." Adam was realistically mourning his wife and though he mentioned how Liz was attractive, there was no "insta-love" like so many irritating and unrealistic stories have. Big plus, in my book.

On the minus side, Drake appears to be a huge fan of the Patriot Act, which allowed our government to detain non-citizens - and even US citizens - for an indeterminate period of time. In other words, it tried to dismantle our rights under the US Constitution, which I can never support.

Still, I enjoyed reading the story for the most part and am willing to try Book 2 of the Adam Drake series.
Muslims are the bad guys, American ex-special op is the good guy. Ground-breaking, eh? )

Still, I enjoyed the book. Writing was good. Few interesting twists, such as making the ex-Special Ops guy a lawyer as well, and the Muslims successful American/International Corporate businessmen. Maybe the Muslim Corporate premise is not totally believable, but it was still done well.

I didn't find as many "stupid" or out of character moments as I find in many of these type of books...and it didn't sound like it was written by a 16 yr old. The action scenes, while still on the edge of believability, weren't as completely over-the-top as many others.

The fact the Muslim Company's acronym was "ISIS" was also unusual. Especially since the book was written in 2012, before the acronym was being used to describe the terrorist organization in the middle east. Prophetic?

It is NOT politically correct. So, it will probably offend those that are. Get over it.

Even tho I am usually very tough in my reviews, I found myself liking this one. Even with the overused plot line.
